UNIT 1

THE USAGE OF SO…THAT & SUCH…THAT

So-that vs, such-that

1.     So + Adverb/adjective + that.

So is paired with that + a clause to express emphasis. So, a degree adverb, modifies on intensifies an adjective or adverb in the main clause. This expression is followed by a subordinated clause (that + clause) which expresses a surprising or remarkable effect. (Note that may omitted, and very cannot be used in place of so.)

Cause

Effect

The meteor storm was so beautiful

That we watched it all night.

The meteor storm passed so quickly

That it went by in one week

The beach is so beautiful

That many visitors come to the place

2.     Such + Adjective/Noun + that

Such is a part of an adjective phrase {Such + (determiner) + adjective} which modifier a noun phrase. This expression is followed by a subordinated clause (that + clause) which expresses a surprising or remarkable effect. (Such is one of the few adjectives that occur before the article of the noun).

Cause

Effect

Now observe the following sentences

1.      Transport museum is so interesting that many visitors from local or overseas visit this place.

2.      Her parents can’t pay her school fee anymore, so she decides to drop out from school.

3.      We encourage her to continue her study so she still gets good education for her future.

NOTE:

In the 1st  sentence. The word so … that modifies or intensifies an adjective or adverb in the cause-clause. And that follows in the effect-clause with a remarkable or extraordinary comment.

In the 2nd and 3rd sentences, the word so expresses the logical effect or result (to the action in the main clause)

So – emphasis vs. effect

1.      Intensifier

In the examples below, so modifier or intensifies an adjective or adver in the cause-clause. And that follows in the effect-clause with a remarkable or extraordinary comment.

Event with emphasis

Remarkable effect

The meteor storm was so beautiful

That we watched it all night. (remarkable)

That we couldn’t believe our eyes.

That we called everyone out to see it.

That we shouted ‘ooooow’ and ‘awwwww’.

That we wished it never end.

That we watched it. (not remarkable)

2.       Preposition

In the example below, so is also a connective adverb complemented by a clause that expresses the logical effect or result (to the action in the main clause)

Event with emphasis

Remarkable effect

We heard about the Perseid meteors.

So we watched the sky for them

We became hungry

So we went inside

I saw a falling star

So I made a wish

Point out

To show a cause and result, use so…that and such… that. Observe the following example.

a.       Because the weather was nice, we went to the zoo.

b.      It was such a nice weather that we went to the zoo.

c.       The weather was so nice that we went to the zoo.

·         Such … that in the sentence encloses a modified noun.

= such + adjective + noun + that

·         So … that encloses an adjective or adverb.

= so + adjective + adverb + that

·         So … that is used with many, few, much and little

Examples:

She made so many mistakes on her exam that she failed on it.

She has so much money that she can buy a big mansion near the beach.
