CONJUNCTION
LEARNING OBJECTIVE:
Having finished learning this activity, the
students are able to:

Study the following sentences.
·
Beno and
Beni are twin brothers.
·
Beno is not
only smart but also diligent.
·
Meanwhile, Beni is also smart but a bit
lazy.
·
Both Beno and Beni are afraid of
mouse.
·
Either Beno or Beni doesn not like playing football.
·
Neither Beno nor Beni likes pets.
·
Both of them love
cooking.
Study the sentences taken from sentences
above.

A.
Both……and
Both … and is a paired
conjunction. Paired conjunctions are used to express actions that two or more
subjects take.
a) Subjects
connected by ‘both … and’ take the plural conjugation.
Examples:
1. Both Ms. Dani and
Ms. Rika are attending the meeting right now.
2. Both father and
mother were watching TV when I go home last night.
3. Both Danang and
his brother have gone to Bali.
b) We use both
with a plural noun.
Examples:
1. Both houses are
on sale.
2. Both men are my
teachers.
3. Both
of the
candidates have been interviewed.
c) We need ‘of’
before the pronouns ‘us, you, them’.
Examples:
1. Both of my
sisters study in the university.
2. Both of his arms
were injured when he slipped on the stairs.
3. Both of Dinda’s
ideas are good.
B.
Either/or
and neither/nor
The pairings
either/or and neither/nor can be used to group two people or
things.
Examples:
1. Well, I
think she’s either foolish or awkward.
2. You can do
your homework either now or after dinner.
3. Sandy’s
going to buy either a TV or a tape recorder with his money.
4. I neither
knew nor cared what had happened to him.
5. Neither the TV nor
the video actually works.
6. The movie
was neither funny nor interesting.
C.
Not only…
but also
Not only…
but also
is a correlative conjunction. Use two verbs that make chronological sense, two
adjectives, or two nouns.
Examples:
1. She not
only wrote the text but also selected the illustrations.
2. She was not
only intelligent but also very musical.
3. He’s not
only funny but also smart.
4. He has not only a sense of humor but also intelligence.
